Tool-shank grinding · Quotation example

One finished-part requirement. Two ways to supply the carbide.

A tool-shank grinding inquiry asked Extramet to quote two options: grind carbide supplied by the customer, or include the carbide in Extramet’s quotation.

Extramet responded with both options. The request highlights an important purchasing question: who will provide the starting material, and what work will each price include?

ROUTE 01

Customer-supplied carbide

The first option covered grinding carbide provided by the customer.

For this type of request, identify the grade, stock dimensions, condition and available material records. Include the finished drawing so the proposed starting material can be assessed against the required work.

ROUTE 02

Extramet-supplied carbide

The second option included carbide supply alongside the requested grinding.

For a material-inclusive quotation, confirm the proposed grade, starting form and included operations. Material availability and delivery timing are checked for the specific request.

Compare the work behind the price

A grinding-only quotation and a material-inclusive quotation cover different responsibilities. Start with the same finished-part drawing, then identify the material and operations included in each option.

If you are sourcing stock for a toolmaking project, the cutting-tool blanks page explains useful starting-form and specification details. Include any approved grade or substitution restrictions in the request.

Make the material decision part of the request

In this example, the buyer asked for both material arrangements at the quotation stage, making the two quoted scopes explicit.

The same approach is useful when you have material on hand but also want to consider an Extramet-supplied material option. Describe what you already have and ask for the alternative against the same finished requirements. The quotation can then identify the proposed material source and the work included.

What to include when requesting both options

  1. Use one finished-part drawing. Include its revision, dimensions, tolerances and surface finish.
  2. Describe the material you have. State its grade, stock size, quantity, condition and available documentation.
  3. Request the alternative. Ask Extramet to quote a suitable starting-material option as well as the grinding work.
  4. Clarify what each price includes. Identify operations, inspection documents and delivery requirements for both options.

The RFQ preparation checklist helps organize these details. For questions about the manufacturing path, explore the machining and grinding considerations.
