Separate processing time from unresolved decisions

A drawing revision, an open grade selection or a missing finish callout can prevent release to production. Identify these items while the quote is being prepared. Record when the specification is complete, when material is available, and when finishing and inspection are scheduled.

Buyer-controlled actions include sending the current print, marking critical surfaces, confirming acceptable substitutions and stating documentation requirements before placing the order. Changing any of those after release can require the schedule to be rechecked.

What a useful delivery answer contains

Ask whether the quoted date means ready to ship or arrival, whether it assumes material availability, and what approvals remain outstanding. A custom blank, punch, pin, or ground component may require engineering review before production. If geometry or tolerance is unclear, the quote can slow down before work even begins.

Send the cleanest drawing available, identify critical dimensions, state acceptable grade alternates, and include inspection requirements at the RFQ stage.
